It’s been an exciting few weeks here at Inboard. Since our previous update we’ve made a lot of progress. We completed significant testing with the M1™, filled the assembly room with components and tooling, further refined the performance of the M1 motor controller firmware, and prepared the Inboard Vision App to be submitted to the app store. But first, we need to explain a minor delay regarding battery certification.
Back on our April 19th update we announced a minor shipping delay because we needed to source a new battery cell supplier, requiring us to restart our battery certification process. Late last week we received notification that we need to replace a subcomponent within our batteries and submit the pack for recertification. This week we successfully replaced the subcomponent and have prepared these new batteries for certification, which should be complete by mid July.
Though this may seem like unfortunate timing, we are committed to delivering the highest quality product out there, and this is a final step in the process of ensuring safety and compliance to standards. The UN38.3 battery certification is a legal requirement to ship the battery within the USA (ground or air). All Lithium Ion batteries and their enclosures are required to pass this in order to be safely shipped.
Beta Boards: The Show Must Go On
Meanwhile, we’re moving full steam ahead with the Beta Board Test Program. Since we can’t ship the boards yet due to battery recertification, we’ll be personally hand delivering each M1 beta board to 25 backers in California. We’ll be contacting these beta testers via email soon.
We apologize to those beta testers who are outside of the state of California. You should have already received notification that we’ve removed you from the M1 Beta Board Test list. If you have any questions, email us at email@example.com.
Due to the battery recertification, our delivery window will be slightly delayed. Of course we’re disappointed to be pushing this back, but we want to deliver the safest product possible that falls within legal standards. Here is the new shipping schedule:
Please keep in mind that we will begin shipping around these timelines, not deliver all product at once. We will be able to confirm specific delivery dates when we get closer to shipping. When we begin shipping, we will immediately send a notification email with the tracking code from the carrier.
The Inboard assembly room has filled quickly over the last month with delivery of decks, Manta Drives, trucks, packaging and everything else necessary to build out the M1.
When the urethane hits the pavement, the Inboard + Mafia Longboard Bag converts into a regular size bag and includes laptop carry with a waterproof zipper, daisy chain loops on the shoulder straps, and two water bottle pockets at the sides.
We’re fully committed to moving forward with the M1 Beta Board Test Program, even if we have to drive the length of California and back to make it happen! Once feedback is collected and batteries are certified, we’ll be submitting final instructions to our contract manufacturer and begin fulfilling final Kickstarter orders at the end of July.
As always, If you have any questions, comments, thoughts, or concerns, feel free to leave a comment here or drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We can't wait to ride with you soon!
