Time to Deliver

We need to make an obvious confession: we’re late. We’re late with posting this update and we apologize for that, but we have some very important news to share, and the news is…

We know everyone is anxious to hear about the progress made since our last update and we thank you for your outstanding patience and support up to this point. Highlights in this update include successfully obtaining certification for the PowerShift™ Battery, shipping at the end of this week, Ryan’s trip to TOA16 in Berlin, Beta Test Program results, and much more. Let’s dive into the details!

Battery Certification

You’ll recall from Update 21 that we encountered a delay in receiving UN38.3 battery certification for the PowerShift™ Battery. This meant we had to restart the certification process and were unable to ship our batteries until we received word on recertification by mid July. Well, mid July has come and gone, and we’re thrilled to let you know that the PowerShift Battery has successfully received UN38.3 certification and is ready to ship worldwide! This means our shipping schedule from the last update stands, and we’ll begin shipping the final production version of the M1™ to Kickstarter backers at the end of this month and to pre-order customers later in August.

Shipping Schedule

As planned we’ll be shipping M1’s in the order we received the purchase. One modification to this is we will begin shipping US orders BEFORE international orders. The M1 has passed all safety certification tests globally, but we are still waiting on receipt of the compliance documentation from some countries. We expect to receive these certifications by middle of August. We’ll keep everyone updated on international shipping as things progress. We will be shiping in small batches at first, and then ramping up shipping as we finalize our logistics process. This shipping priority for US customers will ONLY affect Kickstarter customers at this time.

Beta Testing: Two Thumbs Up

The M1 Beta Board Test Program was a huge success, and we’ll be debriefing with the final wave of testers this week. The feedback we’ve received from these riders has been invaluable. While our hardware withstood the many miles and demands of our beta testers, we have since implemented some minor tweaks to the M1 motor controller firmware to make the final M1 even better. Testers were enthusiastic about the feel of the board, specifically its turning radius, glide, and stability at speed. Many riders were also pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of the integrated LEDs while riding at night, and the inclusion of a soft carry bag that will come with every M1.

While we've caught and resolved several bugs during the Beta Test Program, there is still a chance early backers may discover a bug as well. In the off-chance this happens, we want to encourage you to let us know as soon as possible through the help center in the Vision App, or directly at support@inboardtechnology.com, so that we can immediately issue an appropriate fix.

Test Ride Update

Our first Test Ride Event in Santa Cruz last month was a huge success, and something we hope to do again in San Francisco and LA very soon. A couple of things we learned from hosting the first Test Ride Event was the significant number of M1 boards and team members it takes to do these types of events right. With shipping right around the corner and our team 100% focused on shipping the final M1, we are going to postpone the remaining San Francisco and LA demo events until we get Kickstarter boards out the door. This was a tough decision to make, but we believe it’s necessary to keep the team focused on getting the final M1 (rather than a demo M1) under your feet as soon as possible.

Manufacturing Ramp-up

Earlier this month Theo, Brian, and Tony visited our suppliers to conduct final testing and triple check orders to ensure that our manufacturing ramp-up at the end of this month goes as smoothly as possible. Thanks to the development of some custom tooling, M1 decks will be arriving at Inboard with integrated LEDs and battery compartments pre-installed, which will greatly speed up final assembly.

As you know, we are hyper focused on monitoring the quality and consistency of the build process for the M1, and that’s why we’re planning to assemble the first set of boards in the US at Inboard HQ. Once we are confident of the quality and consistency of the build process, we’ll hand this knowledge off to our own US manufacturer, who will greatly increase our output of finished boards.

Inboard in Berlin

Inboard CEO and Co-Founder Ryan Evans was invited to speak in Berlin, Germany for the Tech Open Air Conference (TOA) from July 13-15. He spoke about rideable technology, the M1 and a place for both in the city of the future. He also took a Beta M1 with him, and impressed everyone with demos outside the conference. Here you can watch Ryan's chat with Anna Rose of TOA, here you can see Ryan's full TOA presentation, and below you can see the highlights and M1 testimonials from Berlin.

Eric Wahlforss, CTO/Co-founder of SoundCloud summed it up best: “This is almost too good for your first product. It’s amazing! The attention to detail, the look and feel. The M1 turning radius and glide is exactly what I’m looking for." Getting feedback like this validates our internal mantra of striving for a perfect product.

Free Pre-Order Shipping Ends Friday
